Frequently Asked Questions about PPH

What is Fen Phen?

Fen Phen is the diet drug combination of fenfluramine and phentermine. Initially, the FDA approved this prescription medication as an appetite suppressant for the short-term management of obesity. Phentermine was first approved in 1959 and fenfluramine was approved in 1973. Fen Phen never gave the FDA studies showing the safety or effectiveness of the drugs.

How is primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) linked to Fen Phen?

Rare heart conditions have been linked to the use of the diet drug Fen Phen, and studies show a correlation between long term Fen Phen users and heart valve damage in a high percentage of people. Primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) occurs in the blood vessels in the lungs. These complications are very hard to treat and diagnose and lead to heart failure and death in some instances.

What happens from using Fen Phen?

Fen Phen has resulted in very serious conditions and even death. The aortic and mitral valves of the heart, as well as primary pulmonary hypertension, or PPH, is associated to the use of Fen Phen.

Why was fenfluramine withdrawn?

Mayo Clinic reported in 1997 that they had seen 24 patients that developed heart valve disease from taking Fen Phen. The valves of the patients who had the valve replacement surgery had similar diseased valves to carcinoid syndrome, indicating a correlation between Fen Phen and valve disease. The FDA later issued a Public Health Advisory describing what the Mayo Clinic had found with Fen Phen.

What are side effects and health complications caused by Fen Phen?

  • Fainting
  • Finger, foot, ankle and leg swelling
  • Feeling of weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pains
  • Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, or PPH
  • Heart murmur
  • Fatigue
  • Death

Who is qualified to be included in the Nationwide Class Action Settlement?

Anyone who has taken Fen Phen for any amount of time is qualified to join the suit. This includes anyone who has taken Pondimin or Redux, either together or in any combination of the drugs. For those individuals wishing to opt-out of the class action, there is still time to do so. Individuals have found that their symptoms from taking Fen Phen have worsened over time. Our legal team of experts can help you receive the compensation that you are entitled to.

What does it mean to “opt-out”?

Opting-out means that you do not wish to be included in the Settlement, and instead wish to individually pursue legal action. By opting-out you are able to receive a larger compensation, if you are entitled to it, for the side effects and health problems you have suffered from Fen Phen.

What are my legal rights involving Fen Phen?

Fen Phen currently has a nationwide class action underway for the drug company’s failure to disclose information that could have prevented the health risks and complications of hundreds and possibly thousands of patients. Former Fen Phen takers that have been involved in the class action lawsuit have found that their health has deteriorated even further over time. The ability to opt-out of the class action and individually pursue a lawsuit with our team of legal experts can ensure you receive the proper compensation that you are entitled to.
